Dear friends, in day-to-day life, I come across some problems which look small; however, they cause big problems if not addressed the right way.
One of these is water accumulation in metros. This accumulation is a result of a concrete jungle. If a place is fully made of concrete, the result is that water has no way to get soaked inside by the soil. Result is water going in drains. Drains are good for normal days, but for rainy days they cannot withstand the amount of water rain brings with itself.
Solution is to make the ground more porous to allow water to get soaked by the soil. This will not only stop falling water levels in the metros, but also get the city in harmony with nature.
In picture 1, it is taken care of that small stones ( black waste stones of iron ore ) are used near the trees to make the area around the tree more porous. Black stones also stop mud formation, which is caused due to waterlogging.
If a dustbin is made around the tree where people can throw waste material like chips packet, ice cream sticks and ice cream covers made of paper. All of these act as good organic fertiliser for trees. In the picture, a small shelter is made for small animals like dogs or bulls ( if a planner is good, he can make space for sow too). Dung of cows and animals too will act as fertiliser for trees. It is also taken care of that tree is installed with some artificial nests made of organic material like coconut husk. Waste released by birds acts as good fertiliser for trees.
It is also taken care of that small vacant spaces are created in between paver blocks for grasses to grow. These small places will enable grass to grow in between and also rainwater to get soaked by soil, thereby increasing the underground water level of the city.
Small speed breakers should be installed in between, which should be around 1 inch and expand 4 inches. This will help in directing water towards the tree. Surplus water can easily be directed to a drainage line, which can be underground or open-air. It is recommended that a drainage system be made using porous stones or black waste ( chaai in common words) mixed with chuna. This will enable water to seep into the soil. Water seeping into the soil will only make that place greener.
In some cases city can allow small hawkers like vegetable hawkers or any hawker to sit around the tree. They can allow them to sit there only if they take care of that surrounding properly. Waste generated by vegetable hawkers that is waste vegetable can act as fertilizer for trees and food for animals around.
This idea can be implemented in a symbiotic way. It will be discussed in the upcoming blog.
